The S.S. Botany Bay was a DY-100-class sleeper ship that was launched from Earth in the year 1996 following the Eugenics Wars, with Khan Noonien Singh and his fellow genetically-engineered human Augments on board. Built before the invention of warp drive, the Botany Bay was only capable of modest sublight speeds. Even interplanetary travel could take years, thus the ship was equipped with hibernation systems for crew and passengers. In 2267, Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise discovered the Botany Bay adrift in space with its crew of Augments in a state of suspended animation within. After being revived, Khan and his followers took control of the Enterprise, abandoning the Botany Bay. Kirk and crew were eventually able to retake the Enterprise and left the Augments to start a colony of their own on the nearby uninhabited class-M planet, Ceti Alpha V.
As portrayed in Star Trek: The Original Series "Space Seed" (TV, 1967)
The S.S. Botany Bay model, as seen in “Space Seed,” was designed by Matt Jefferies, with his original vision being that of an old space freighter with removable cargo crates along the hull. The model was 44 inches long and constructed primarily of wood with finer details kitbashed from various model kits available at that time. The model was built at Linwood G. Dunn's Film Effects of Hollywood, with Jefferies himself adding the weathering.
