Spacedock One was a 23rd century Starfleet-operated Federation space station in Earth’s orbit. It featured four large pairs of doors that allowed starships to enter the colossal structure and dock inside for refit, repairs, and resupply. Many famous vessels spent time at Spacedock One while the space station was active, including the U.S.S. Enterprise, the U.S.S. Excelsior, and the U.S.S. Enterprise-A. It remained in use through the late 24th century. By the early 25th century, Spacedock One was retired and moved to Athan Prime to house the Fleet Museum.
As portrayed in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (Film, 1984)
The Spacedock One exterior model was designed by David Carson and Nilo Rodis at Industrial Light & Magic. A number of study models were made under supervising model-maker Steve Gawley with input from Leonard Nimoy, Harve Bennett, and Ralph Winter. Once the design was finalized, a detailed shooting model was constructed and wired with intricate lighting effects. Spacedock One appeared throughout the rest of the original film series and footage from the films was reused for shots of similar spacedocks in Star Trek: The Next Generation, with the Enterprise-D superimposed over the preceding footage.
