The U.S.S. Protostar NX-76884 was a prototype, the first of its namesake class, designed to test Starfleet’s proto-warp engine, a new type of propulsion technology which allowed the ship to travel at speeds far exceeding those of conventional warp drives. Under the command of Captain Chakotay, its first assignment was to travel back to the Delta Quadrant, retracing some of the steps that the U.S.S. Voyager took during its famous journey home to the Alpha Quadrant.
As portrayed in Star Trek: Prodigy (TV, 2021-Present)
The Protostar was designed by Star Trek: Prodigy director Ben Hibon and art director Gia Nguyen of Nuen Studio. Original design explorations were done by veteran Star Trek designer John Eaves, but eventually Hibon and Nguyen decided to take the design in a different direction, wanting to make the ship look different from anything else in Starfleet.
